Some will argue that male dogs may be smarter than female dogs. That male dogs are larger than female dogs. That male dogs will run off and the female dogs won't. That female dogs will not "hump" the leg and males dogs will.
All of the above are untrue myths. First of all, a dog can be intelligent regardless of gender. I've witnessed my share of dumb dogs and smart dogs in my nearly 50 years of life. Being a breeder for nearly 11 years as of Jan. 2007, I have witnessed many female dogs being larger than their brothers. Female dogs will "hump" other female dogs when one or the other is in heat. It's all about the hormones. When female dogs are in a group, one or more can turn alpha and a fight can ensue if one is in heat, regardless of breed. The same can occur with male dogs.
Both gender of dogs will run off in NOT supervised and under the control of their owner. Regardless of gender, dogs are curious creatures and will roam the neighborhood if not confined to their yard or home.
Personally, I find that either gender work out well for families as pets and the gender gap is created by those who have more of a personal preference for one or the other.
As a private breeder for nearly 11 years, we have always been confused about the reasons someone preferred one gender over the other, but have come to know it's not about the gender, it's just about personal preference.
What I have personally witnessed with males vs. females is that sometimes the female dogs can be a bit stubborn and headstrong. Sometimes training can take a week longer with a female dog than with a male dog. Sometimes the male dog can be a bit more focused than a female dog. It is NOT true that a male dog is clingy or in want or need of more attention than a female dog. That's sheer nonsense. If a dog is needy or clingy, its the personality of that particular dog and has nothing to do with its gender....or perhaps it has other issues going on. Maybe it is just a very loving dog. I personally have two male dogs of different breeds in my home and I also have a spayed female dog in my home that is a different breed than either male. Neither male dog that resides in my home is neutered. None of the dogs mark inside of my home.
None of the dogs roam my neighborhood because they are always under supervision even inside of our fenced yard. All three get the same equal amount of attention and none seek more attention than the other. If you are seeking a puppy and you are not sure which gender you desire to purchase, don't make your purchasing decision based on gender. Where our Goldendoodles are concerned, both gender are very sweet....loving....attentive and personable.
When puppies are raised with with alot of attention, regardless of gender, that is what they come to expect. Male dogs are just as personable, loving, calm, sweet and gentle as their female counterpart. Frankly, I think female dogs are very "over-rated". The male dog definitely is not selected as often as the female dog and I personally think it's a shame they are overlooked based on their gender.
It is true the male "penis" does sway women to select a female dog more often, but if the dogs' "penis" is the issue, buy it some pants! Unfortunately dogs have no way of using towels and cloths to clean themselves, so whether the dog is a male or female, they must conduct this maneuver to perform hygiene. Dogs will be dogs regardless of their gender.
