The Miniature Schnauzer was developed in the late 1800s as a small farm dog and ratter in Germany. It is the ONLY terrier that is not originating from European Isle stock.
The Miniature Schnauzer came about by breeding the standard Schnauzer with the Affenpinscher and possibly a Poodle. All of the Schnauzers get their name from one individual dog named "Schnauzer" (meaning small beard) who was exhibited around 1879.
In 1933, AKC divided the standard Schnauzer and the miniature Schnauzer into seperate breeds. The Miniature Schnauzer is the only Schnauzer to remain in the Terrier group in America. In England, it joins the other Schnauzers in the Utility group.
The Miniature Schnauzer came to America after World War II. It far outpaced the popularity of the Standard and the Giant Schnauzer rising to the third most popular breed in America at that time. The Miniature Schnauzer remains as one of the favorite toy breeds; has a smart look and acts like an alert family pet as well as a competitive show dog.
TEMPERAMENT
The Miniature Schnauzer is very playful, sensitive, inquisitive, alert, spunky, and enjoys being YOUR companion! They are well-mannered housedogs that enjoys being a part of the family and being the center of attention. They are less aggressive than most terriers and they are better with other animals than most terriers. They are clever, can be stubborn but for the most part, are eager to please. With proper supervision, schnauzers can be good pets for children...however...as with any breed, your child must be taught how to properly interact with a canine. Never leave a small child alone with any breed.
UPKEEP
Their wire coat should be brushed once or twice weekly, plus scissoring and shaping (clipping for pets and stripping for show dogs) every couple of months. This breed can also be completely shaved down for convenience. Bathing should only be once a month.
DISQUALIFICATIONS FOR SHOW:
** Any height under 12" or over 14"**
**White except for small white spot permitted on chest of black dogs**
**Please note that Lake Ridge Schnauzers are "TOY" sizes and are too small for show. Our Miniature Schnauzers are under 12" in height and range from 8-12 lbs as an adult.**
AKC PREFERRED HEIGHT/WEIGHT FOR SHOW PURPOSES:
** 13-15 lbs**
**12-14" in height**
Preferred heights/weights by kennel clubs are for show purposes only; WE DO NOT PARTICIPATE IN SERIOUS SHOW EVENTS. WE DO OCCASIONALLY SHOW OUR DOGS IN "FUN" DOG SHOWS.
Our schnauzers are salt & pepper only. If you are seeking any other color, we can not assist you. Young puppies are always darker than adults. Their coloring will lighten as they age. WE DO NOT CROP EARS...however, we do dock the tail of our schnauzer pups by day two of their birth. Our schnuazer pups range from 8 lbs- 18 lbs; We call our very small Schnauzers "TOYS". The term toy is not an actual registered term..rather, it is a breeders' term (like Tcup) meaning smaller than kennel club standards for a particular breed.
