Sara's new Goldendoodle puppy is inside of amniotic fluid (called a sac) that helps the puppy survive while inside of the mother's tummy. This fluid is what the puppy breathes before being born.
The new puppy is now coming out and soon the sac will break open. I remove the puppy after it comes out and break open the sac so that Sara can rest before the next puppy is due. Her litter is a very large one..... 12 in all!!! Males and females!
It is very important to ensure that the puppy does NOT inhale amniotic fluid as this can cause aspirated pneumonia. (respiratory distress caused by breathing fluid into the lungs). This is prevented by keeping the puppy tilted downward while cleaning the mouth, nostrils and body and breathing into its mouth/nose with short, quick bursts of air by the breeder...ie...myself. It is sort of like giving mouth to mouth but not placing your mouth directly upon the puppy's mouth. This becomes necessary at times and if a breeder is not available during the birthing process, a puppy can die within minutes if left alone due to suffocation.
